Maehem News: CHILD BITE Announces Live Tour Dates

Detroit punk/metal unit CHILD BITE will take to the streets in the coming weeks on a month-long rash of live dates. The trek begins mid-February with a six-show run that includes an appearance on No Coast Fest in Arlington, Texas with Cherubs, Big’n, and others. In March, the band will play three warm up shows including a performance in Cincinnati, Ohio with Sheer Terror and Carnivore A.D. before joining Today Is The Day on a portion of their No Good To Anyone tour. CHILD BITE‘s journey will run through two dozen US cities from March 9th through April 5th. Additional support will be provided by The Obsessed and -16- on select shows. See all confirmed dates below.

CHILD BITE will be touring in support of their Blow Off The Omens full-length, released late last fall via Housecore Records. Captured by legendary engineer Steve Albini (Nirvana, Neurosis, The Jesus Lizard) and mixed by Grammy award-winning engineer Collin Dupuis (Tomahawk, Dr. John, Lana Del Rey), the nine-track offering is a leaner, meaner follow-up to the band’s critically lauded 2016 full-length, Negative Noise. From the head bob-inducing, noise rock groove of “Vexed Life” to the Jello-Biafra-with-NoMeansNo-esque freight train that is “They All Look Away,” Blow Off The Omens covers a lot of ground within its half-hour running time. Riffs indebted to both Piggy and Pig Champion root their way throughout the album like alt-metal/hardcore hogs on the hunt.

CHILD BITE’s Blow Off The Omens is out now on CD, digital, and limited-edition vinyl formats.
For physical orders, visit the Housecore store at THIS LOCATION. For digital orders, go the CHILD BITE Bandcamp page at THIS LOCATION where the record can be streamed.

Single Review: COLOR KILLER ‘Not Your Valentine’

Marlborough (MA) punk prodigy band Color Killer is back in action with their latest single release Not Your Valentine!

This is a two minute straight up jam that speaks out against everyone’s favorite made up Hallmark Holiday. It creatively expresses how frustrating it is that we all feel like we ‘have to validate’ our love for one another with a box of chocolates or a stuffed animal with some kind of lame love related pun about you being PUURR-FECT. Color Killer always makes me laugh at the creativity of their tunes. They’re always relatable and quite obviously about things that would frustrate a young punker in their age group especially; however, they are also about things that us “older” folks are equally frustrated with as well; like how much winter sucks or how creepy spiders can be.

Color Killer has come a long way, in what feels like such a sort time, since the very first time I saw their video performance of “Down With Winter” about two years ago. They’re always so cool and so fun! Whenever I happen to see that they have a new release I know it’s always going to be worth my time to check it out! Not Your Valentine is available NOW on Spotify, Apple Music and Google Play! Be sure to give them a like and a follow if you haven’t already so that you don’t miss out on what’s coming up next!

Catch COLOR KILLER live at their next performance HERE!

Album Review: SUPERNAUT ‘The Green’

Hello again music readers and enthusiasts! Another jam-tastic album review here for you-SUPERNAUT has released their album The Green with fat tone and fuzz galore! Let’s dive into this one together shall we?

Track one-‘Spacewreck’ starts off with an opening hum and undertone of the intro really builds up in a subtle yet tasteful manor. It then takes a hard right turn into a straight forward punk-esque swing. The drummer really knows how to accent the little things on this album; the combination of dramatic intent and reverb really brings you right up front- even through your headphones. Topped off with a super tasty solo-you get a very organic vibe. The second track ‘Dream Eater’ is definitely much more progressive in ways, like the groove and dynamic in their composition. The quick wittily licks and ‘riffy’ rhythms shows you what the band is capable of standing them right long side of groovy-doom style bands such as The Sword and Redfang.

‘Third Circle’ is next and the first thing I can say I love about this track is how much voice the bass has. I can’t get over the way the band members of Supernaut stay in perfect harmony throughout. From the guitars’ fuzz in complimented by the bass fuzz; to the layering of the vocals-they really pull it together “Sound as a Pound” The slick blues licks and bass runs are solid as a rock, sliding right into a classic doom-styled breakdown adding yet another layer to Supernaut’s dynamic. “Honey Mountain” is a bit more on the jazzy side. I dig the idea of having a short ambient instrumental. Sometimes these tracks can seem a bit pointless to impatient listeners, but I love to embrace these short james and use them to build context to their albums as a whole.

“Fade Out” maintains a calm vibe while having a busy nature. It makes me really want to see their drummer in action especially. These is so much going on underneath the rest of the instruments that I feel I’d have to actually see the rhythm section live to catch it all. Side note: Nice use of cowbell!! The build and dives of this song are just gross in all the best ways naturally leaving us with a fade out- nice.

“Crimson Sea” has a lot of grind. It does indeed put you in the right mindset according to the first impression given by the title of the tune. Second by second the vocal desperation grows and draws you deeper and deeper. “Buglung”..well first of all HELL YEAH MAN! The crazy almost acid-rock jam style of this track is pure gold. As a fan of Primus, Opeth, Neck and a lot of other crazy artists; I am in love with everything this track has to offer.

We have arrived at the title track of the album “The Green” which has a Twilight Zone vibe in the chorus which really gives the lyrics power. I also feel a Druid vibe in there as well. It almost sounds as though the guitarist shapes their tone a little differently on each tune. I’ve always admired that and wished I had that kind of patience myself! “Owl” is a super smooth southern-blues adventure. I’ve always been inspired by tunes like this, especially lyrically. The attention to detail and an ability to personify is an art form.

We finish out the album with the track “Iron Goddess Of Mercy” There is so much attitude packed into this jam and the devil is definitely in the details on this one! The way the tune is brought up and down throughout the track with technicality and grace is very quality-“Go big or go home!” as they say, and Supernaut has proven to be nothing short of “Big” on this jam. They end this album with great intensity!

All in all- I honestly enjoyed this album in its entirety. I have yet to come across a band with this kind of nostalgic dynamic before. The Green as a whole made me think of many types of old-school down right dirty rock n roll artists. “Rock n’ roll is coming back baby!” as my friend Jeff Sandbom called it- and I stand by that fact!

Thank all of you who are reading this and I hope you are all jamming this album with me! You can find it for yourself- HERE!

Produced in Los Angeles, California by Damien Rainaud at Mix Unlimited, DRAGONFORCE‘s Extreme Power Metal was also recorded, in part, on guitarist Herman Li’s livestream channel on Twitch (twitch.tv/hermanli) with participation from fans. Known as the fastest band in the world, the Grammy-nominated act is based in London, England. Their platinum-selling record, Through The Fire And Flames, brought them international acclaim and was featured as the most-challenging song on Guitar Hero III. Their energetic and humorous live performances have won them fans on every continent. The group is known for their long, complex, and fast guitar solos performed by Herman Li and Sam Totman, who founded the band after meeting through a classified ad in 1999. Since then, the band has released seven studio albums, including Valley Of The Damned (2003), Sonic Firestorm (2004), Inhuman Rampage (2006), Ultra Beatdown (2008), The Power Within (2012), Maximum Overload (2014), and Reaching Into Infinity (2017). 2019 brought with it the next chapter in DRAGONFORCE history: Extreme Power Metal!

Regarding Extreme Power Metal, Li says, “This album again combines the best of DRAGONFORCE in an even bigger, more epic way than we have ever done before. We are so excited for fans to hear it!” The keyboards of the new album were performed by Coen Janssen of symphonic metal titan Epica, adding a new dimension to the album. Notes Totman, “We worked really closely with Coen on this new album. We are so happy with what he has brought into this new album. Every fan will be so happy to hear his majestic playing.”

Drawing from a wide range of influences, the band’s sound combines the sing-a-long choruses of classic ’80s rock with triumphant, uplifting melodies and fantasy-themed power-metal-inspired lyrics. As a nod to their passion for all things video-game related, the band frequently incorporates retro game sounds and melodies into their recordings and live shows. Maehem News: ORPHAN DEVIL Release EP ‘Victims Of The Night/Drifting Away’ February

Gates of Hell Records will release the two-song EP Victims of the Night/Drifting Away from upstart Finnish Metallers ORPHAN DEVIL on 7″ vinyl format on February 21. The EP showcases a deft blend of classic metal with a dose of speed. Formed in 2016, Orphan Devil is prepared to emerge from the Finnish metal underground with a pair of songs that showcase their unique influences and stellar songwriting.

The self-released digital version released is available to stream HERE
Track List
Side A – Victims of the NightSide B – Drifting Away

Named after a 1982 single from the obscure Swedish band Shakespeare, Orphan Devil was formed in 2016 by a group of old Finnish friends who shared the same interest in music. Once vocalist Perttu joined earlier in 2019, Orphan Devil’s lineup was officially complete, and the band quickly got to work on some existing ideas, hammering out the two-song Victims of the Night/Drifting Away EP, which will be formally released by Gates Of Hell Records.

While Orphan Devil is a classic metal band at heart, their influences reveal something deeper. Continuing the thread of taking influences from their neighbors to the northwest, Orphan Devil has culled from their vast library of vintage Swedish metal bands for their sound. (It’s also worth pointing out that none of the members of Orphan Devil would have picked up an instrument without Iron Maiden.) But, this slight punk influence and melancholy coming from Sweden has worked its way into both “Victims Of The Night” and “Drifting Away,” two songs that were put together by the guitar tandem of Sakke and Kristo, with the latter handling the lyrics that touch upon themes of life and death with a glimpse of hope.

Orphan Devil’s method of completing their songs harkens back to the old-school as well: Once Sakke and Kristo have worked out the riffs and lyrics, the rest of the band (which includes bassist Sampo and drummer Late), add their ideas.

Designed to whet the appetite of the metal scene, Victims of the Night/Drifting Away hones in on Orphan Devil’s very simple philosophy: Have something to say with your music. Don’t just copy already existing bands. Be creative and find your own thing. Truer words have not been spoken.

Maehem News: KOJ New Single And Live Session Video ‘Jenny’

German indie three-piece KOJ share their new single “Jenny” along with a live session video. It’s the second single from the bands Long Branch Records label debut album “HOME” coming Spring 2020. The song “Jenny” talks about experiencing dark moments in your life and feeling like there is no possible way out of it. KOJ wanted to explore the way someone might perceive the world through this lense of anxiety and hopelessness and it made them wonder what it might take for that person to see a silver lining and to feel like they belong again.

KOJ comments on new single “Jenny”:”Jenny was written in our home studio and it was a very intuitive and collaborative process. The three of us started jamming randomly at the beginning of a songwriting session and it just sort of came together. Beray Habip, our producer and engineer, coordinated the whole thing and guided us through the process of making the song. In a way Jenny came out of thin air, but then again this is one of those songs that seems to have been waiting somewhere in the collective subconscious just to be written.

Stream the song HERE

Basically it only took us one day to write the entire track and record a demo version. It was such a wonderful feeling to listen to Jenny at the end of that day, realising that ‘wow, we really did this!’. We then took the demo to Toolhouse Studios to record the final version of the song. So, the song is called Jenny, which originally came from ‘Jennifer Lawrence’, which was the working title for the track. The song has a line about a silver lining, so we thought of ‘Silver Linings’ and about Jennifer Lawrence. We had started this weird habit on previous songs of temporarily naming the songs after celebrities, before committing to a proper song title. We created quite the line-up with names such as Pamela Anderson or Scarlett Johansson, before renaming them for the album. Jennifer Lawrence became Jenny and stayed this way, because the name also has a very personal reference and connection to the theme of the song.”
