What’s up local music lovers- long time no read! This time I have a really unique and kick-ass instrumental album for you- HAPPY 420!!!

Coyote Man of Chicago, IL is a legendary two piece who has just released their killer progressive instrumental masterpiece ‘Precognition’! This has to be one of the coolest local albums I’ve heard in years..and actually one of the coolest albums in general-So lets just jam it!

“Blatherskite” has a big synth intro which I can dig! The drumbeat in the background before and during the guitarist’s entrance was great I’m loving the warm tone of the bass fills as well. Everything blends together effortlessly. The dynamic nature of this song really keeps your brain active and intrigued. “Remnants” hits you right in the jaw just to slow down and tell you an enticing story. I really get into the band’s ability to paint you a picture-especially without vocals. Many bands/artists do that, but many of the very same artists are rather sporadic and fickle in the composition. This second track, although slower, was huge and heavy.

“Perilous” has more of a groove style tempo that pushes more emotion into the track. This wouldn’t be the same had it been overly technical or fast. The rests are perfectly timed with great composition; the percussion really shines during this track as well. Every feeling is perfectly set out for you with a perfect sense of space and understanding. “The Unseen Hand” has that creepy ’80’s’ horror delay and build up- very great timing in the bass as well! That specific to the second rhythm gave the second half of this track a huge push.

“Death Before Dishonor” has some serious Queensryche vibes, and I mean that entirely as a compliment; they were prog GODS to my early self and there was something in the way that they wrote that I still hold dear to me. A mystery aesthetic if you will. “Apocalyptic” has an intro that I would say is an accurate assessment of the track title. It definitely validates my thoughts of an apocalyptic perception. However, I also get some cosmic images as well; epic to say the least. Amazing layering throughout as well as a superb build up to the climax. The guitar solos sing with a heartfelt melody what I personally feel hold much more passion than any vocals.

All in all I was very impressed! The style was something I have not heard in an instrumental release before, and it somehow made me feel nostalgic after my first time hearing it. I can’t get over the warm tones and the spot on production. If Steven Wilson got his hands in this band- the world wouldn’t know what to do!

Don’t forget to follow Coyote Man on all their socials including Youtube! Remember your support matters-especially during times like these! Stay safe and thrash fast!

Maehem News: VIRCOLAC to Release Masque March 22

After five years of roaming city streets like a pack of rabid dogs, VIRCOLAC is set to release its debut full length album titled Masque on Sepulchral Voice Records in Europe and Dark Descent Records in the US.

Following on from 2016’s The Cursed Travails of the Demeter EP, Masquecelebrates a bolder edge mixing more visceral and vicious aural assaults with a foreboding and obtrusive atmosphere throughout the 36 minutes of the recording.

The album title reflects the myriad masks we as human beings hide behind and the cover represents what is ultimately left once the mask of flesh is finally removed. Whether pauper or opulently venal, the end is the same for us all.

Thematically, the album reflects two different strands of storytelling, with Side-A adopting a starkly defiant tone throughout. Side-B then takes a moodier assessment of the obsequious venality that governs the world we inhabit and inherit. The conclusion of this being the mass industrialized slaughter of much of Europe’s young in the great war.

Masque is a direct statement of purpose by VIRCOLAC and is the culmination of half a decade of steadfast belief in the continual relevance and importance of Death Metal.

Maehem News: MALAMORTE New Album Out ‘Hell For All’

Malamorte; the side project of Alex Nunziati (Lord Vampyr, Cain, Nailed God, Shadowsreign, Sepolcrum, ex VII Arcano, ex Theatres des Vampires) is a ferocious evil metal band hailing from Italy. Telling tales of the occult, mysticism and more with a backdrop of power, thrash, and black metal, the band’s third offering “Hell For All” is now available in Europe as of January 25th via Rockshots Records along with it being released on February 8th in North America.

“Hell For All” was written as a cohesive album, with each song being composed in a complementary fashion to the rest of the tracks. Compared to their 2016 album “Devilish Illusions”, this new record brings more thrash and power elements as the band deviates from their black metal origins.

Keeping the listener in mind, Malamorte desires to formulate a trip, one that “alternates hard times to more reflective or lighter moments” and can be played on repeat with each new listen creating a new perspective. Quality and energy are the primary focuses for these Italians, who allow their fans to escape into an alternate reality and cite influences from a broad range of musical greats including Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Iron Maiden, and Slayer.

Maehem News: L.A. Guns Release New Single ‘Stay Away’

Hot on the heels of the success of their last record, “The Missing Peace”, L.A. Guns is ready to attack again with the new album, “The Devil You Know”. The album is set for release March 29th via Frontiers Music Srl. Listen to the new single “Stay Away” Below:

Sonically, “The Devil You Know” covers a lot of ground and incorporates influences from Black Sabbath to Led Zeppelin to Kyuss to The Hellacopters, all while distinctly sounding like L.A. Guns. The band is rejuvenated and inspired after relentless touring and are literally taking no prisoners.
“After the success of ‘The Missing Peace‘ a lot of people requested that the next record stay on track with the more metal side of the band’s music, which is my personal favorite side of the band,” says Tracii Guns. He continues, “I drew from my typical influences of NWOBHM [New Wave Of British Heavy Metal], while still not forgetting my earlier influences of the late ’60s and early ’70s . I wanted to lead with the track “Stay Away” because it’s a familiar L.A. Guns sound, but even a bit more metal. Something to get everyone’s palate wet.”
“Its loaded with attitude and most of it bad,” says vocalist Phil Lewis of the album’s lyrical content. You want a love song f*** off and listen to Journey. They say write about what you know, and lord knows we’ve all known some evil bitches and dudes that have gone out of their way to make life difficult for us. We say unanimously from the whole band f*** you, we’re going places you could only dream about. We know what it’s like to be put down, poked, ridiculed…but guess what, looks like we get the last laugh. This band has always been fueled by adrenaline and anger and this record is a glimpse inside the carnival of rage that dwells deep inside our collective souls. Not much sunshine and hold tight to your lollipop…this is gonna be a fast, loud, bumpy ride!”
L.A. GUNS are truly one of the great American hard rock bands of the last 30 years. Since their self-titled debut in 1988 to the widely praised 2017 comeback album “The Missing Peace”, L.A. GUNS, led by Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis have always delivered solid rock ‘n roll to their fans.
This current incarnation of the band has been touring non-stop and the cohesiveness of the unit, not to mention Phil’s stunning and unique vocals and Guns’ mind-bending guitar playing, are on full display here. A must hear and listen for all fans of the band, both new and old!

Album Review: ALL KINGS FALL-‘Grip Control’

All Kings Fall is a Wisconsin thrash metal band that began in 2015. Since then, they have released their debut album ‘Drink to the Lost’ (2016) and toured all over the Midwest (even going as far as Missouri.) They have also played several events such as Savagefest, Orangefest, Pantera Tribute show, Vulgar Display of Wisconsin, and many more; as well as hitting The Rebel Stage at Summerfest just this year!

After much anticipation, the new All Kings Fall album ‘Grip Control’ has made a powerful release! Most noted for their live performances, the band’s explosive second album proves to be succinct in delivery and overwhelming in projection. ‘Grip Control’ will seize your attention and never let go! These Waupaca, WI natives embody the Arctic bite of the north wind. Frigid guitar tones crackle between the shatter of icy cymbals and guttural roars. Powerful breakdowns, insane grooves, and epic solos bring a progressive groove to thrash metal that’s all things Raw, Real, and Heavy.

We begin our journey with the frigid intro “Wander the Gray (Reprisal).” This short instrumental track is a great example of a classic metal intro but told in true All Kings Fall form. Ominous tones and shattering cymbals guide us to the explosive second track. “More” opens with a captivating swing giving you no choice but to move! Its rhythms are marked by powerful hooks and excellent delivery. The lyrics on this track reveal the inclinations toward excess and debauchery. This excess is further emphasized by a ripping guitar solo that is intricate yet accessible. Accompanying are tight drum filled layers with thundering double kicks beats. There is definitely a want, and a need, for more.

Showing the cost for our hedonism, track three brings us to “Alcatraz.” This incredibly high energy tune feels like being trapped in a prison riot! There are clarity and harmony in the vocals, yet its undeniable attitude is a spit in the face. Powerfully organized fills echo in accompaniment with some of the best kick drum sounds on the album. But, wait for the breakdown to hit! Once that china cymbal goes off get ready to redefine mosh-worthy riffage. The solo tone on this track stands out for its atmospheric details, while still possessing the cold enigma of a storm cloud. Amid this icy torrent, dramatic stops break the chaos and command attention. This same pause ends the song swiftly like the strike of a cobra, and we’re getting “Ripped in Half” in track four. This song title has to be one of the coolest song titles in metal, and for good reason. This machine gun drives and overall hook quality shows a powerful understanding of music with riffs reminiscent of Anthrax and early Megadeth. The rhythmic syncopation reaches a high point with an intense off-time pulling us around like we’re being ripped in half!

Check out their video for “Ripped In Half” in the link below!

Track five, “Coming Down” drops us into the technical belly of the beast. We get to hear the bass guitar shine on this track with radioactive tone and percussive attacks. Chaotic crescendos build to exotic time signatures as we’re taken through the highs and lows of human consciousness. Despite the heavy syncopation, you can’t help but bang your head to these insane rhythms. Smooth transitions show the technical influences of Death and Opeth presented in a truly unique way. These themes are explored on an even deeper level in track six, “The Blackest of Mold.” The backup vocalist takes center stage on this tune showing stellar projection that pierces straight to the heart. This whole song is organized like a precise strike. Pure ferocity is captured in tasteful blast beats while technically textured riffs temper its rage with calculating precision.

This rage is carried into the lyrical content of track seven, “Choke at the Gills.” An icy bell from the drummer and we’re awash in expertly crafted rhythms. This song breeds aggression while offering a reflection on the nature of toxicity and mediocrity. This rhythm transitions into track eight, “Pulse of Panic.” If you haven’t been moshing in your living room or driving erratically through traffic up to this point, you will now! This song solidifies the band’s skill for creating and writing around hooks. This same musicianship is shown in their composition as we’re dropped again into “Forlorn Reflection.”

Track nine, “Forlorn Reflection” shows the great chemistry between the musicians as they explore intricate time signatures weaving in and out of ominous off beats and even between one another. Atomic bass tones occupy a powerful pulse with thundering drums and shattering cymbals to perfectly compliment the frigid guitar tones. Our time for reflection ends as a galloping rhythm carries us off into track ten. “Grip Control” is the title track on this album demonstrating the true All Kings Fall spirit. A strong driving pulse gives the bassist another shining moment commanding attention with nuclear tone. Powerful percussive attack and crazy low end impacts every feeling on the album. An icy solo accompanied by the whole band’s groove gives everyone a chance to shine throughout.

This shining is further emphasized with the crazy solos from each member in track eleven, “Immortal.” This track shows a culmination of skill; showing more intense dynamics and ability. Multiple interesting rhythms happen simultaneously as the three individually explore tempos that always seem to fit together in a way you can move to. The drums get an epic shining moment with an adventurous drum solo expertly punctuating with craftsmanship. The lead vocalist truly shines as well during the chorus. Being able to play heavily syncopated bass rhythms while singing in opposing meter demonstrates excellent musicianship and coordination. This groove is like surfing through a hurricane carrying us out of the storm and back to reflection. The outro track “Wander the Gray (Remission)” brings our journey full circle with genuinely chilling yet full sound. A progressive high point, this ominous instrumental track will make you play the album again! The icy cauldron of ‘Grip Control’ coalesces as the album draws to a close.

Each song on ‘Grip Control’ is a complete idea showing immense depth in content and addictive hooks. Each solo on the album is unique having something new to say with different techniques. The drum sounds and techniques are the perfect complements to the irradiated glacier that is All Kings Fall. Fans of Anthrax and Megadeth will love the fast and hard Thrash Metal roots; while fans of Opeth and Gojira will find it tempered with a melodic progressive groove. Ranging from Gwar to Opeth, from Pantera to Death, All Kings Fall has something for every metal fan, and ‘Grip Control’ is living proof.
